Richard I Burton, M.D.

Richard I. Burton, MD, is an orthopaedic hand surgeon and Professor Emeritus at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he previously served as chair of Orthopaedics and senior associate dean for academic affairs. Trained at Harvard Medical School with orthopaedic residency at Massachusetts General, Peter Bent Brigham, and Boston Children's, plus a hand surgery fellowship at Roosevelt Hospital, he is especially known for developing the thumb arthritis operation widely referred to as the “Burton procedure.” He also helped build Rochester’s hand program, including launching the institution’s Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship, and served as president of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
