Joseph Anthony Caruana, M.D.

Joseph Caruana, MD, MS is a Western New York surgeon and clinical ethicist with longstanding ties to Buffalo-area medicine and education. He earned his medical degree at SUNY Upstate and completed his surgical residency at Erie County Medical Center, later receiving a master’s degree in health care ethics from Creighton University. Dr. Caruana is adjunct faculty at Canisius University, where he teaches medical ethics; he also founded the Institute for Health Care Ethics and serves as co-chair of the ECMC ethics committee. At ECMC, he served as bariatrics director and helped lead the program to MBSAQIP Comprehensive Center accreditation.
