Richard D Blondell, MD

Richard Blondell, MD, is a Professor Emeritus of Family Medicine at the University at Buffalo whose career has centered on addiction medicine, substance use treatment, and opioid-related care. At UB, he cared for patients withdrawing from and stabilizing after drug or alcohol addiction, and his work has also focused on clinical strategies for patients with prescription drug addiction, including people with chronic pain and pregnant patients.

He also played a leading role in physician training in this field. Blondell founded UB’s addiction medicine fellowship, one of the first programs of its kind to receive national accreditation, and in 2013 he was appointed to lead the National Center for Physician Training in Addiction Medicine, a UB-based effort aimed at improving early intervention, prevention, and addiction care training for physicians.
