He trained in ophthalmology at the University of Rochester/Strong Memorial Hospital, served as chief resident, and completed a vitreoretinal diseases and surgery fellowship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School; he has also served as a clinical associate professor of ophthalmology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry.
